Tintri and Unidesk Partner to Simplify VDI

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – October 16, 2012 – Tintri, Inc., the leading producer of purpose-built, VM-aware storage platforms and Unidesk Corp., the leading provider of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provisioning, application delivery and personalization software, today announced a partnership to help joint customers accelerate and expand VDI deployments.

VDI is an increasingly popular option for IT departments seeking to simplify desktop management tasks and centralize security and data protection, while supporting an increasingly mobile workforce. VDI projects often stall or even fail altogether, however, due to storage costs, management complexity, and use case limitations. Together, Tintri and Unidesk allow organizations to overcome these issues.

Custom built for virtual environments, Tintri’s VM-aware storage platform provides storage and virtualization administrators alike with a straightforward view of their infrastructure that allows them to instantly visualize bottlenecks. All monitoring and storage operations are at the VM-level, including storage-level space and performance efficient snapshots and clones.

With Tintri’s flash-enabled storage, VDI IOPS issues vanish, and traditional storage tasks like provisioning LUNs and volumes become unnecessary. Administrators can easily scale Tintri to support thousands of desktops, saving time, and enabling them to focus on larger issues.

With Unidesk’s one-of-a-kind layering software, VDI administrators have only one gold image of Microsoft Windows® to patch and update for all desktops. Applications can be packaged separately and layered on top in minutes, without the limitations of application virtualization. End users enjoy fully persistent desktops that keep all customizations, including user-installed applications. By sharing layers across many desktops, Unidesk cuts VDI storage capacity requirements up to 70%, even for persistent desktops, enabling more desktops to be hosted on Tintri’s VM-aware storage and reducing overall TCO.

“Unidesk and Tintri are a natural match when it comes to supporting our customer’s VDI initiatives,” said Geoff Stedman, Vice President of Marketing for Tintri. “Our VM-aware approach helps organizations overcome storage-centric bottlenecks that traditionally plague VDI deployments. Unidesk provides tremendous storage efficiencies for persistent desktops, while also greatly simplifying application delivery and image management and expanding VDI use cases. We’re excited about the value our joint solution brings to customers.”

“Tintri has emerged as one of the top storage options for VDI, and we’re thrilled to call them a partner,” said Tom Rose, Chief Marketing Officer for Unidesk. “We complement each other extremely well in the wider VDI stack, with both companies focused on reducing the cost and complexity traditionally associated with VDI. We look forward to continuing to work together to provide joint customers with the best possible VDI experience.”

Customers Are Deploying Tintri and Unidesk with Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View

Customers are successfully using Tintri and Unidesk in combination with Citrix XenDesktop® and VMware View™ to simplify VDI implementations.

“Like most organizations, we’ve moved ahead cautiously with VDI to give it time to mature, and allow innovative vendors like Tintri and Unidesk to emerge,” said Paul Kramer, Information Systems Manager at Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. “Our patience is paying off. Tintri simplifies storage management and gives us instant visibility into any VM performance issues across the stack. Our testing of Unidesk virtual desktops on Tintri storage accessed by Citrix XenDesktop shows better performance than a physical PC. This, along with Unidesk’s ability to make persistent desktops cost-effective and manageable, is enabling us to expand our VDI implementation.”

“We chose Tintri for our VDI deployment primarily because it’s the only VM-aware storage solution. It gives us simple, efficient, per-VM management and easily meets the performance demands of our VDI environment,” said Steven Goodson, Network Administrator at William Woods University. “Unidesk’s straightforward approach to delivering applications and managing virtual desktop images, and its tight integration with VMware View, has made our VDI deployment an extremely low-maintenance, stress-free affair. We couldn’t be happier, especially now that two of our key vendors are working together.”

Tintri and Unidesk will cohost a technical webinar, “Storage and VDI Deep Dive,” on October 25 at 2pm ET, featuring Tintri storage expert Ed Lee and Unidesk virtualization expert Ron Oglesby.
